The two wings, which hold the housing blocks, are almost identical.'Which' abre uma explicação extra sobre algo já citado.
The city looks like an airplane seen from above.'Looks like' = parece com. Sem o 'like' muda o sentido.
It was built from nothing in the middle of the country.'Built from nothing' = construída do zero.

The dome is the Senate, and the bowl is the Chamber.'Dome' = cúpula. A cúpula virada para baixo é o Senado.
Laws are made in the National Congress.'Law' = lei.
The bridge is impressive!'Impressive' = impressionante.
Brazil is a democratic country.'Democratic' = democrático.
Most of these buildings were designed by Oscar Niemeyer himself.Passiva com 'by' e o autor no fim da frase.
It is a palace whose columns touch the ground very lightly.'Whose' liga as colunas ao palácio numa frase só.
He preferred curves to straight lines, and he said so often.'Prefer A to B' - a preposição é 'to', e não 'than'.
It is made of concrete, and the shape came before the material.'Made of' quando o material ainda se reconhece.

Niemeyer designed all of this.'Designed' = projetou. Oscar Niemeyer projetou a catedral inteira.

The light comes through the ceiling and changes during the day.'Through' = através de. 'Ceiling' é teto por dentro.
The angels hang from above without touching the floor.'Hang from' = pender de. Verbo irregular no passado: hung.

Let us rent a boat on the lake today!'Rent' = alugar. 'Let us' (ou 'Let's') = vamos.

Do you know how to swim?'Swim' = nadar.
The water is so calm today!'Calm' = calmo/tranquilo.
The lake was created by a dam built in the late fifties.Passiva com 'by': a represa fez o lago existir.
I have been swimming here since I arrived in the city.Presente perfeito contínuo: começou antes e continua.
The water is warm today, even in the early morning.'Warm' = morno. 'Hot' seria quente demais para nadar.
If it rains today we will not swim in the lake.Primeira condicional: 'if' + presente, depois 'will'.

There are no street names here!Em Brasília o endereço é um código: SQN 302, Bloco B.
Each superblock has its own school and shops.'Superblock' = superquadra.
Walk two blocks and turn left.'Block' = quarteirão.
Everyone gets lost here the first week.'Get lost' = se perder.
Addresses here are written as codes instead of street names.Passiva 'are written' descreve a regra, sem dizer quem escreve.
It is a system which nobody understands at first.'Which' liga a descrição ao sistema.
Every number means something once you learn the pattern.'Every' pede verbo no singular: 'means'.
Once it is learned, the system is actually very simple.'Once' = assim que, depois que. Abre a condição cumprida.

This park is bigger than Central Park!'Bigger than' = maior que. É assim que se compara em inglês.
The running track goes all the way around.'Track' = pista.
People come here to work out every morning.'Work out' = se exercitar.
Find a spot with some shade.'Shade' = sombra.
It is bigger than Central Park in New York, and few people know that.Adjetivo curto leva '-er' e depois 'than'.
I have been running here every morning since I moved to the city.Presente perfeito contínuo: rotina que começou antes e continua.
Let us rent a bicycle and go around the whole park.'Let us' é a sugestão. Na fala vira 'let's'.
This is the park which has more than ten kilometres of trails.'Which' liga a característica ao parque.

This market only opens on weekends.'On weekends' = nos fins de semana.
The weekend market sells crafts and food.'Crafts' = artesanato.
Everything on this stall is handmade.'Handmade' = feito à mão.
That stall over there has the best price.'Stall' = barraca/banca.
Could you tell me how much this handmade bowl costs?Pergunta indireta: depois de 'how much', a ordem volta ao normal.
I have been looking for one of these for a long time.Presente perfeito contínuo: a procura começou antes e continua.
Is this made by hand or by machine?Passiva em pergunta: 'is this made'.
Is it cheaper if I buy two of them together?Condicional dentro de pergunta: negociar sem exigir.

They were called candangos.'They were called' = eles eram chamados.
The whole city was built in under four years.'Built' = construída.
They built a capital from scratch, in the middle of nowhere.'From scratch' = do zero.
In 1956 this was the middle of nowhere.Expressão fixa pra lugar remoto.
The whole capital was built in about a thousand days.Passiva 'was built' com o tempo no fim.
Workers who had come from the northeast built most of it.'Had come' é anterior a 'built'. Dois passados em ordem.
They worked day and night to finish it on time.'Day and night' é expressão fixa, sem artigo.
Here there was nothing before nineteen fifty-six.'There was' para existência no passado, no singular.

It is the plants, not dirt.'Dirt' = terra, sujeira. A cor vem das plantas do cerrado.
There are dozens of waterfalls less than an hour away.'Waterfall' = cachoeira.
It's a short hike from the parking lot.'Hike' = caminhada/trilha.
The rocks are slippery near the water.'Slippery' = escorregadio.
Although it looks dry, the cerrado is full of underground water.'Although' abre o contraste entre aparência e realidade.
Three of the biggest rivers which start here cross the whole country.'Which' liga a descrição aos rios.
The water is very cold even in the middle of the day.'Cold' = frio. Para água de cachoeira, é o adjetivo certo.
It is better to go early before the buses arrive.'It is better to' + verbo é o conselho impessoal.

Could you please send me the document?'Could you please...?' é o pedido formal. Com amigos, 'Can you...?' já basta.

A little small talk before the meeting is normal.'Small talk' = conversa fiada/social.
