Em Dubai o inglês é a língua franca de verdade: quase todo mundo é de outro lugar e ninguém fala a língua do outro. As frases abaixo são as dessa conversa neutra, que é o inglês mais útil que existe.

Burj Al Arab

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is a man-made island shaped like a palm tree, and it is so large it can be seen clearly from space.

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa stands 828 meters tall, making it the tallest building in the world - you can see it from 95 kilometers away on a clear day.

Desert Safari

Just outside the city, the Arabian Desert offers golden dunes where visitors ride camels and go dune bashing in 4x4 vehicles.

Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain can shoot water up to 150 meters into the air, choreographed to music and lights right beside the Burj Khalifa.

The Dancing Fountain

It has been the tallest building in the world since it opened.'Has been... since it opened' = 'e... desde que abriu' (present perfect).

The higher it goes, the smaller everything else looks!'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I had never seen anything like this before!'Had never seen... before' = 'nunca tinha visto... antes' (past perfect).

The souks

The gold souk sells gold. The spice souk sells spices.'Souk' = mercado árabe tradicional.

The first price is where you start, not where you finish.'Where you start' = onde você começa.

You're expected to haggle a little.'Haggle' = pechinchar.

Be ready to walk away, and mean it.'Walk away' = ir embora.

A city of arrivals

Around nine out of ten people here were born somewhere else.'Born somewhere else' = nascido em outro lugar.

Most people here are expats on work visas.'Expat' vem de 'expatriate'.

Migrant workers built most of what you can see.'Migrant worker' = trabalhador migrante.

Many workers send most of their salary home.'Send home' = mandar para casa.

Into the desert

The heat drops and the sunset over the dunes is the point.'Drops' = cai/diminui.

Is dinner included in the price?'Included' = incluído.

During Ramadan

They fast from sunrise to sunset, for a month.'Fast' como verbo = jejuar.

Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast at sunset.'Break the fast' = quebrar o jejum.

Just avoid eating or drinking in the street during the day.'Avoid' = evitar.

We wait out of respect, not because of a rule.'Out of respect' = por respeito.

Living with the heat

Dress and manners
