Em Tóquio quase nada está escrito em alfabeto latino, e o inglês vira a ponte entre você e a cidade. As frases abaixo são as de sobrevivência real: perguntar direção, pedir comida, entender um aviso de estação.

São 45 frases em inglês, cada uma com o que significa e onde usar. Elas não foram escritas para esta página: são as mesmas das dez missões de Tokyo, Japan dentro do PROPRIUS, e estão aqui em texto para quem quiser só ler.

Shibuya Crossing

Shibuya Crossing is the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, with up to 3,000 people crossing at once.

Senso-ji Temple

Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the year 645, and is dedicated to the goddess Kannon.

Tokyo Skytree

The Tokyo Skytree is the tallest broadcasting tower in Japan, standing at an incredible 634 meters.

Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower is inspired by the Eiffel Tower but is actually about 13 meters taller.

Imperial Palace

The Imperial Palace sits on the site of the old Edo Castle and is the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan.

Let's touch base once the numbers are in.'Touch base' e jargão para 'fazer uma atualização rápida', geralmente usado com 'once' ou 'after' para marcar quando isso vai acontecer.

The tighter the deadline, the harder we work!'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I've been encouraged to think outside the box on this project.'Has been encouraged to' = 'tem sido incentivado(a) a' (present perfect passivo).

Shibuya Rush

Everyone crosses from every direction at the same time!'At the same time' = 'ao mesmo tempo', reforcando que tudo acontece simultaneamente.

The busier it gets, the more exciting it feels!'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I had never seen this many people cross at once!'Had never seen... before' = 'nunca tinha visto' (past perfect).

Senso-ji in Asakusa

It's the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.'Oldest' = mais antigo (superlativo).

You shake the box and draw your fortune.'Fortune' = sorte/destino.

The shopping street leads straight to the temple.'Leads to' = leva até.

A shrine is Shinto; a temple is Buddhist.São tradições distintas, com arquitetura distinta.

The konbini

It's a convenience store, open all day and all night.'Convenience store' = loja de conveniência.

You can pay bills, print documents and send parcels.'Parcel' = encomenda.

The ready meals here are genuinely good.'Ready meal' = refeição pronta.

They're open around the clock.Expressão fixa pra funcionamento ininterrupto.

A bowl of ramen

You buy a ticket from the machine before you sit down.'Before you sit down' = antes de sentar.

It's built for eating quickly, on your own.'On your own' = sozinho.

Slurping is completely normal here.'Slurp' = sorver fazendo barulho.

One bowl is a full meal.'Bowl' = tigela.

Train etiquette

People queue on the marks painted on the platform.'Queue' = fazer fila.

You don't take calls on the train. You text.'Take a call' = atender uma ligação.

Those are priority seats - leave them free.'Priority' = prioridade.

The train is always on time. Always.'On time' = pontual.

At the onsen

You wash completely before you get in.'Wash' = lavar-se.

The water comes out of the ground already hot.'Hot spring' = fonte termal.

The small towel never goes into the water.'Towel' = toalha.

Just be respectful and follow what others do.'Respectful' = respeitoso.

Cherry blossom season

People sit under the trees and have a picnic.'Picnic' = piquenique.

They last about a week, sometimes less.'Last' = durar.

The blossom forecast is on the news every night.'Forecast' = previsão.

The park is in full bloom this weekend.'Bloom' = florescer/floração.

Karaoke night

You rent a private room by the hour.'By the hour' = por hora.

The melody helps the words stick.'Stick' aqui = fixar na memória.

I'm completely tone-deaf, but I'll sing anyway.'Tone-deaf' = desafinado.

We take turns - everyone picks one song.'Take turns' = revezar.

Numbers, prices and times

The train leaves at eight oh seven.O zero vira 'oh' em horários.

It costs fifteen hundred yen.'Fifteen hundred' é comum e natural pra 1500.

Thirteen, thirty. Listen to the stress.A tônica muda de lugar e muda o número.

How much is it?'How much' pra dinheiro e incontáveis.
